A Note from the President – June 2016

Tuesday, May 31, 2016 @ 04:05 PM

Thank you to everyone who attended and came out to support our local roofing association May dinner meeting.

Our spot light featured Manufacture was Natalie Walgis and Tyler Allwood of Eagle Roofing Products. They took this opportunity to present us with some new products from Eagle.

Our guest speaker Trent Cotney – FRSA Legal Counsel offered our Roofing Contract a one-hour CE credit. The class was very informative and we had a lot of interaction from the group. Great advice in obtaining payments from our customers and a lot of Do’s and Do Not’s. Thank you Trent and Show us the $$$.

News Alert

Our Big win in Sarasota County made national news!

The roofing industry had a big win on Tuesday, May 24, 2016 in Sarasota County with a county commission vote against a proposal to pay about $1.5 million to bring a large national roofing company to Florida. The local economic development council, along with the state’s Enterprise Florida, dressed up the extremely vague and secret proposal as no more than a warm and fuzzy corporate headquarters relocation where all the jobs would be administrative (paying an average salary of $60,000 per year) and related mostly to out of state roofing work and would not compete with existing businesses and workforce demands. The whole thing just did not add up and had a bad odor to it. Only a person who does not understand the business of construction would tell a story like that and expect to live happily ever after.

Thankfully, the Sarasota County Commission agreed and voted it down. It is important to note here that the Sarasota County Commission is very supportive (as are we) of economic development that is truly that. Their comments were thoughtful and showed they not only heard and understood our concerns, but they also appreciate the overall policy and practical implications for the community. We thank them.

  • Commissioner Alan Maio
  • Commissioner Paul Caragiulo
  • Commissioner Christine Robinson
  • Commissioner Charles Hines

No one should ever support a proposal that is just a handout to a company to come to Florida and drive existing companies out of business, especially companies that were not built on a handout.

Those who worked hard in the effort to stop the corporate handout includes:

  • Sarasota/Manatee Roofing & Sheet Metal Contractors Association (SMRSMCA)
  • Sutter Roofing
  • Alvin Singleton Roofing
  • Paul Furr Roofing
  • Green Roofing, Rachel Beckner
  • FRSA and Cam Fentriss, FRSA Legislative
  • Gulf Coast Builders Exchange (GCBX)
  • Manasota Air Conditional Contractors Association (MACCA)
  • And a host of Roofing Contracts that were there in support of our industry.

Great team work everyone!
